Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of incorporating 2% proanthocyanidin into 10% phosphoric acid on the immediate bond strength of universal and conventional adhesive systems to dentin. Methods: Forty human molars were sectioned with dentin exposed and divided (n=10) according to the etching and adhesive strategy: G1 – 35% phosphoric acid, Adper Single Bond 2 (SB - 3M ESPE); G2 – 10% phosphoric acid + 2% proanthocyanidin, SB; G3 – 35% phosphoric acid, Single Bond Universal (SBU - 3M ESPE); and G4 – 10% phosphoric acid + 2% proanthocyanidin, SBU. Then, composite resin layers (Filtek Z250 – 3M ESPE) were constructed and, after 24h, they were sectioned and subjected to the microtensile test. Two specimens from each group were observed under scanning electron microscopy. The data were subjected to ANOVA and unpaired t-test (α=0.05). Results: There was no statistical difference between the groups regarding bond strength values (p=0.626). When individually evaluating the type of adhesive system, changing only the surface treatment, no differences were observed (p=0.146; p=0.779, respectively for SB and SBU). Conclusion: Treatment with phosphoric acid containing proanthocyanidin did not impair immediate bond strength in dentin.
