Abstract
Objective: To analyze the time interval between diagnosis and the start of treatment, relating in to the stage at which the disease was diagnosed and death. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study that analyzed 134 medical records of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer at the referral centers for cancer treatment in the city of Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, in 2019 and 2020. Results: Squamous Cell Carcinoma was diagnosed in 92,5% of the cases. 8,4% of cases were diagnosed at stage I, 9% at stage II, 15,9% at stage III, and 44,7% at stage IV. The time interval between diagnosis and the initiation of treatment was longer for cases diagnosed at stages I and II and shorter for those diagnosed at stages III and IV. Death was related to stages III and IV. Conclusion: Although the results are in agreement with the literature, the present study reflects a local occurrence; however, we can suggest that the longer time interval between diagnosis and start of treatment is due to the time required for surgical planning and preparation.
