Abstract
Objective: To analyze the efficiency of the antioxidant and anti-aging effects of Astaxanthin (AX). Methods: In vivo studies with supplementation in humans that aimed to demonstrate the efficacy of AX in anti-aging and antioxidant action were selected. The databases were Pubmed, Scielo, Google Scholar, and Worldwide Science, with articles from 2018 to 2023. Results: We selected 5 articles from double-blind randomized controlled studies using AX supplementation alone or in combination with other bioactive compounds such as vitamin C, vitamin E, cocoa polyphenols, in dosages ranging from 4mg to 24mg daily, demonstrating its efficacy as anti-aging, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the skin, cognitive ability and resistance in physical activity. In all studies that used AX, positive results were shown in the actions studied. Final considerations: Strong evidence was observed that AX is a powerful ally in the fight against aging and oxidative stress in healthy adults and elderly individuals or those with mild cognitive and motor impairments.
