Abstract
Objective: To identify the profile of fishermen and non-fishermen with systemic arterial hypertension and factors associated with adherence to antihypertensive treatment. Methods: This cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with patients diagnosed with systemic arterial hypertension treated at the Itaipava Family Health Strategy in Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Two groups were formed: fishermen (GP, n=79) and non-fishermen (GNP, n=155). Participants were interviewed to collect data on demographic variables, habits, and health care-related factors. Medical records were reviewed. Therapeutic adherence was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Bivariate and multiple analyses were performed. Results: The fishermen group (GP) exhibited a lower level of education, a higher proportion of smokers and alcohol users, a lower level of regular physical activity, less awareness of diet and exercise’s role in controlling blood pressure, and a lower degree of therapeutic adherence (p<0.05). In the final model, only education remained significant: individuals with lower education were at higher risk of low therapeutic adherence (OR=2.86; 95% CI:1.39-6.01; p<0.05). Conclusion: Fishing did not affect adherence to antihypertensive treatment. However, certain characteristics identified in this study, particularly lower education, were associated with lower therapeutic adherence.
