Abstract
Objective: To evaluate knowledge retention among medical students about first aid techniques for adult victims. Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study, carried out with 225 undergraduates enrolled in medical universities in Brazil to evaluate the retention of knowledge about first aid techniques throughout their undergraduate years. The students responded to the questionnaire, with questions divided into five themes. Results: It was statistically identified that students from the 5th to 8th semester performed better compared to students from the 1st to 4th semester, suggesting that the accumulation of knowledge and the development of more analytical thinking throughout the course medicine may be influencing factors, which suggests that the time passed from instruction in first aid techniques to the time of research was not a determining factor. Conclusion: The analysis shows that the interval between first aid classes and the application of the questionnaire is not relevant, suggesting that knowledge retention is possible regardless of the time elapsed, since a significant correlation between the participants' number of correct answers and the The time elapsed since the acquisition of knowledge was not observed.
