Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of doxycycline in the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections caused by bacterial agents, evaluating its potential as a therapeutic alternative and its relationship with bacterial resistance and its impact on public health. Methods: Through a qualitative integrative review, covering the period from 2019 to 2024, 13 articles selected from the Scientific Electronic Library Online and PubMed databases were analyzed. Results: The studies revealed that doxycycline is effective in treating sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and syphilis, and less so in gonorrhea, in addition to showing potential in post-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk populations. The integration of doxycycline and other preventive methods such as condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis for human immunodeficiency virus is a promising approach. However, the study also identified challenges such as variability of efficacy in different populations and the risk of developing bacterial resistance. Considerations: The research considers that, despite the need for further studies into its long-term effects, doxycycline represents an important tool in the fight against bacterial sexually transmitted infections. Its incorporation into treatment protocols and the prevention and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance could contribute significantly to reducing the burden of these infections on global public health.
