Abstract
Objective: To investigate the impact of physical activity on the prevention and management of dementia in an elderly population, highlighting its effects on preserving cognitive functions and improving quality of life. Methods: This is an integrative review that collected data from secondary sources through research in relevant bibliographies. To survey articles in the literature, a search was carried out in the following databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar published in the last five years (2019 to 2024). The descriptors “Physical activity”, “Quality of life”, “Health of the elderly” and “Dementia” were used to search for articles. Results: The practice of physical activities demonstrated significant improvements in cognitive function, reducing the risk of developing dementia in healthy individuals and delaying the progression of the disease in patients already diagnosed. Final considerations: It was concluded that regular physical exercise is an effective strategy to promote brain health, with notable benefits in preserving and improving cognitive functions. Physical activity, by stimulating mechanisms such as neuroplasticity and the release of neurotrophic factors, has significant potential for public health in the context of population aging and in combating neurodegenerative diseases.
