Abstract

Objective:To verify the influence of an ergometric treadmill protocol associated with Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) on gait and respiratory muscle strength in individuals with Parkinson's Disease. Methodology: Clinical, longitudinal, descriptive and prospective study, with 5 individuals with PD in stages 2 to 3 on the modified Hoehn & Yahr scale, of both sexes. The protocol included respiratory muscle training with Powerbreathe Plus and an ergometric treadmill, carried out three times a week, totaling 12 sessions, subject to manovacuometry assessment to measure inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength, the Unified Parkinson's Disease Scale (UPDRS) and the Index Gait Dynamics (IMD) before and after treatment. Results: There was a 16% increase in the general IMD score and improvement in three of the scale's variables, as well as improvements in gait and an increase of 91.8% in inspiratory pressure and 25.6% in expiratory pressure. In the UPDRS, 100% of participants had a final score below 30, indicating advances in motor and respiratory functionality. Conclusion: The proposed protocol of the present study showed improvement in patients with PD, demonstrating the effectiveness of the treatment, however, the study was limited by the low number of participants
