Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of transcatheter repair with the MitraClip device in treating mitral insufficiency in elderly patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted through searches in the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. After applying the eligibility criteria, 34 articles were selected. Results: The use of the MitraClip is associated with increased life expectancy and quality of life in patients with mitral regurgitation. It is noteworthy that this technology is a cost-effective option compared to the expenses of medical therapy and is considered the best alternative for ptiaents in whom open mitral valve repair surgery is not feasible. The MitraClip demonstrated a reduction in residual mitral regurgitation, minimal complications, and low procedure-related mortality. Final considerations: It is considered that the MitraClip is an effective therapeutic strategy for elderly patients, as the majority of them present a high risk for open mitral valve surgery. However, its use should be prescribed only for patients ineligible for open surgery. Thus, the use of the MitraClip should be based on strict clinical criteria.
