Abstract
Objective: To analyze the obstacles to addressing Neurocysticercosis. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted between April and June 2024, based on the guiding question: "What are the challenges faced in addressing neurocysticercosis?" which was configured from the combination of descriptors with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”: “Neurocysticercosis AND (Diagnosis OR Epidemiology OR Therapy OR Transmission)”. To conduct this review, articles published between 2014 and 2023 in the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) via PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) were selected, using Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS). Results: The search resulted in 10 articles covering the main topics for understanding the disease. The main findings encompass difficulties in accurate diagnosis and understanding of the epidemiology, transmission, and appropriate therapy for the disease, which were revealed as challenges in combating this infection, but allow for identifying perspectives for addressing the pathology. Final considerations: Late diagnosis, nonspecific symptomatology, poor sanitary and economic conditions, the need for imaging exams, and ineffective prevention hinder the fight against neurocysticercosis.
