Abstract

Objective: To evaluate dental avulsions prevalence in sports practice and to investigate the athletes and coaches’ knowledge and management of this trauma. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted in PubMed, DOAJ and BVS databases, using the descriptors tooth avulsion, dental trauma, sport, football, baseball, snowboard, volleyball, hockey, basketball with the boolean operator AND. Inclusion criteria: publications between 2014 and 2024 showing cited descriptors: in the abstract and title; studies in English, Portuguese, Spanish; randomized clinical trials, cohort studies and clinical case report ;  in humans. Results: A total of 155 studies were retrieved in the searches. After removing duplicates, the titles, abstracts, and language of the studies were analysed and 90 were excluded. Subsequently, 17 studies were eligible, read in full and were included in this integrative review. Final cosiderations: Avulsion is one of the most prevalent dental traumas among athletes and coaches of high and medium-risk sports; anatomical factors (overjet, Angle class II division 1 malocclusion and inadequate lip coverage) predispose to the occurrence of trauma; coaches and athletes demonstrate limited knowledge regarding the immediate and late management of traumatized teeth; inflammatory root resorption, ankylosis, infraocclusion, pulp necrosis and need for extraction are common complications in avulsed teeth.
