Abstract

Objective: To identify the evidence on the strategies used in Primary Health Care to reduce the prescription of potentially inappropriate medications to the elderly. Methods: Integrative literature review, based on the question: what strategies are used in Primary Health Care to reduce the prescription of potentially inappropriate medicines to the elderly? The PICO strategy was used: P=elderly; Intervention=strategies used in Primary Health Care to avoid prescribing potentially inappropriate medications; Comparison=not applicable; Outcome=lack of knowledge among health professionals about criteria for safe drug prescription. A research protocol was drawn up and a database search was carried out in November 2022, identifying 224 articles, which resulted in 12. Results: Different strategies were used, such as educational ones, the use of software and several or just a single criterion with computer support. Final considerations: There was a reduction in polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medicines for the elderly, and in some studies there was a reduction in hospitalisations and falls, with improvements in quality of life.
