Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the association between the risk of Refeeding Syndrome (RS) and feeding routes in patients undergoing intensive care in a General ICU of a University Hospital in São Luís (MA). Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sample. Data collection was systematized by a specific questionnaire, with data extracted from the database linked to the Clinical Nutrition Unit of the aforementioned hospital and, in a complementary manner, from the electronic medical record. Results: A total of 257 patients participated in the study. Nutritional risk was seen in 58.3% of the sample, and regarding the nutritional diagnosis, 43.1% had some degree of malnutrition. Regarding the criteria used in the screening of RS, the most observed, in isolation, were: absence of criteria (60.0%), reduced caloric intake (12.4%) and weight loss (6.23%). An Odds Ratio = 5.641025 was observed: representing that, if a patient is fed by an alternative route, the chances of him/her having a risk of RS are 5.64 times greater compared to patients fed orally. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for a multidisciplinary approach in the ICU, focused on preventing malnutrition and adequate management of RS, aiming to improve clinical outcomes and reduce complications in a vulnerable population.
