Abstract

Objective: To describe the impact of polypharmacy and cognitive capacity in institutionalized elderly people. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out between July and October 2024, with elderly people living in a long-term care institution (LTCF) in the city of Pelotas. The analysis was carried out using medical records, tests such as the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess cognitive capacity, the Time Up And Go (TUG) for the risk of falls and the Functional Reach Test (FAT) to balance and Hand Grip Strength (HGS) for strength. Results: The sample was mostly composed of women aged over 81 years, high prevalence of polypharmacy 79.8% multimorbidity 82.4%. It was identified that 76.9% of elderly people had cognitive decline and 65.5% were at high risk of falls. Note that elderly people with cognitive impairment and high risk of falls were female. Conclusion: From this, it is evident the need to implement strategies to monitor polypharmacy and the cognitive status of elderly people in ILPI, and the importance of physiotherapy to in order to reduce the risk of falls and promote quality of life for this population.
