Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the use of elastomeric infusers in a High-Complexity Oncology Care Unit (UNACON) in Federal District, identifying strengths and possible areas for improvement. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, prospective, and descriptive study involving 40 cancer patients using elastomeric infusers with fluorouracil at a UNACON in Federal District. The infuser installation process was monitored to identify critical performance issues, and each infuser was weighed at three different occasions to measure the residual volume of fluorouracil after infusion. Patients were interviewed to assess their understanding of care instructions and whether they followed the guidance provided. A descriptive analysis of the data was conducted, and tables were created. The study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee. Results: A total of 200 infusers were analyzed, with only one (0.5%) showing a residual volume higher than the allowable 10%. Only one (0.5%) infuser was improperly installed. Of the 35 respondents, 94.3% (n=33) reported understanding all the information received, but 28.6% (n=10) faced difficulties with the infuser. Additionally, 37.1% (n=13) did not follow bathing instructions, and 71.4% (n=25) avoided leaving home with the infuser, mainly due to fear. Conclusion: All analyzed processes were deemed adequate; however, a weakness was identified in patient guidance.
