Abstract

Objetive: To map the scientific literature on parenting as a factor in the development and genesis of social anxiety in adolescents. Methods: The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews, adopting eligibility criteria that included studies focused on parenting and social anxiety in adolescents. Data extraction was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Medline, ScienceDirect, Psychology Index, and LILACS. Results: A total of 209 articles were identified, of which 13 were selected for final analysis. The data indicated that parenting can act as either a risk or protective factor in the development of social anxiety. Specifically, hostile, neglectful, or excessively controlling parenting behaviors were identified as factors that increase predisposition and risk for social anxiety and distress. This study highlighted factors such as temperament, genetic predisposition, parental mental health history, parents’ perceptions of their children, parenting differences based on the child’s gender, adverse childhood experiences, among other elements. Final considerations: The study emphasizes sociocultural diversity and the identification of multiple factors associated with parenting. As a limitation, it points to the scarcity of literature, especially national studies, on the topic.
