Abstract

Objective: To identify the effectiveness of High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) and Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in relieving pain and improving function in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) based on the most recent clinical studies on the topic. Methods: This is a descriptive integrative review with a qualitative approach using the PubMed, SciELO, and PEDro databases. Results: Searches in the aforementioned databases yielded a total of 54 articles. One of the retrieved articles was a systematic review that included seven studies, totaling 61 studies. A rigorous exclusion process was applied, and 10 clinical trials were included in this review: 6 trials focused on LLLT and 4 on HILT. Final considerations: This review highlights the efficacy of infrared LLLT and HILT in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Both methods demonstrate benefits in pain relief and functional improvement, which are enhanced when combined with complementary therapies such as physical exercise.
