Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between periodontal disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Bibliographic Review: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) encompass several clinical conditions, in which the Chronic inflammation occurs in different parts of the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are the most typical forms of these conditions. Due to its connection with various manifestations that occur outside the digestive system, IBD can affect several organs and systems in the body, including the oral cavity. An association between periodontitis and intestinal inflammation has been confirmed, but whether IBD leads to periodontitis or whether periodontitis is a contributing factor to IBD remains controversial. Furthermore, identifying the predisposition profile can pave the way for the use of medications that reestablish the balance of the immune system, helping to control these conditions. Final considerations: It can be considered that periodontal pathogens and pro-inflammatory cytokines contributed to the exacerbation of the inflammatory process of chronic intestinal diseases. However, more randomized controlled clinical studies are needed to confirm this causal relationship.
