Abstract
Objective: Explore how Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) influences the dietary restrictions of children with this condition. Methods: This is an integrative literature review with a quantitative-qualitative approach. Studies published from 2013 to 2023 were included, using descriptors such as autism, feeding, children; autism and children and feeding; feeding ASD children. Studies that did not address dietary restrictions, nutritional habits, and the lifestyle of children with autism spectrum disorder were excluded. Results: Twenty-four relevant articles with accurate methodologies were selected, all of which demonstrated that children with ASD exhibit food selectivity, primarily related to food consistency. It was observed that these children showed a preference for certain food classes, resulting in typical family behaviors and the need for external professional interventions. Final considerations: More than half of the studies reported a preference for carbohydrates or sugars in food choices. A predominance of stress, distress, and concern was detected among parents. Intensive Interdisciplinary Behavioral Treatment and special, differentiated diets to replenish nutritional levels were the most common approaches to address challenges related to food selectivity in children with ASD.
