Abstract
Objective: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of ophthalmologic patients treated at a trauma center in Bahia. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, analyzing medical records of patients treated for ophthalmologic emergencies at a trauma center in Bahia from March to July 2023. Results: There was a predominance of men, with an average age of 40 years, self-declared as mixed-race, from Salvador-BA, followed by Feira de Santana. Workplace accidents were the main cause, especially among men, while accidents without trauma were more common among women. The most prevalent initial diagnosis was mechanical trauma, with superficial foreign bodies being the most common. Among the initial surgical procedures, evisceration was the most frequent. Outpatient initial treatment was more common than surgical, with topical treatment without further intervention being the most common approach. Conclusion: These results highlight the importance of educational measures, especially regarding the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent avoidable eye injuries and provide information to improve hospital management in the ophthalmologic segment.
