Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of using tilapia skin in the tissue repair process of wounds on the back of rats. Methods: The study was conducted with 11 male Wistar rats aged 60 days. The animals were divided into 2 groups, in which the experimental group received freeze-dried tilapia skin xenograft and irradiated with 30kGy and the control group received only gauze coverage. After 10 days, the animals were euthanized, and the xenograft was extracted to evaluate the tissue biopsy for histological analysis. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test, considering p<0.05. Results: It was possible to observe that the tilapia skin did not cause infections or discomfort to the animals. In the histological analysis, the control group had a greater presence of inflammatory infiltrate and a more extensive ulcer, which was confirmed by statistical analysis in which the total area of the wound in the control group was larger compared to the group that received the dermal matrix. Conclusion: Histological and statistical evaluations demonstrated significant results in the total area and height of the lesions in the animals in the treatment group, thus suggesting tilapia skin as a safe and effective dermal matrix for performing xenografts in animals.
