Abstract
Objective: To understand the influence of nootropic substances on academic performance. Methodology: This is a descriptive and qualitative literature review. A search was conducted on the platforms PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) using the descriptors "Nootropics" and "Academic Performance." The search included articles written in Portuguese or English, published until May 2024. Studies that did not address the use of nootropic substances in the context of academic performance were excluded. Results: The use of nootropics among university students has significantly increased, primarily motivated by the pursuit of improved cognitive performance and stress management in academic settings. However, the effects of such substances in healthy individuals remain uncertain and pose potential risks, such as dependency and long-term adverse effects. Conclusion: Although nootropics may offer cognitive benefits, their indiscriminate use can lead to public health issues
