Abstract

Objective: To identify the influence of food consistency on the oral health of children with cerebral palsy and compare them with normal children and those with other systemic alterations. Methods: Two questionnaires were used: one socio-economic and another on dental conditions and food consistency. Sixty children were interviewed, 24 (40%) female and 36 (60%) male. They were divided into: Cerebral Palsy (1), Other Systemic Alterations (2), and Normal Children (3), with 20 children in each group. Results: The mean age for groups 1, 2, and 3 was 7.90 (± 2.93), 5.85 (± 2.25), and 6.30 (± 2.40) years, respectively. The Visible Plaque Index was evaluated, and the average was 41% (± 33.3), 37.7% (± 45.5), and 40.9% (± 37.1), respectively. The average DMFT was 2.25 (± 2.86) in group 1 - low; 4.60 (± 6.64) in group 2 - moderate; and 6.40 (± 5.02) in group 3 - high. In group 1, 60% mainly consumed liquid/pasty foods. Conclusion: The DMFT of children with cerebral palsy is much lower compared to the other groups (p = 0.004), and liquid/pasty food consistency is the most common (p = 0.001).
