Abstract
Objective: To analyze the profile of isolated microorganisms and the frequency of bacterial and blood component disposal in platelet concentrates (PCs) in a blood bank service in Belém - Pará, Brazil. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The data collection procedure was carried out at the Coordinating Blood Center of the HEMOPA and covered the period from January 2022 to June 2024. The data was tabulated and processed using Microsoft Excel ® software, where the relative frequency was calculated. Results: The average frequency of bacterial contamination in the period analyzed was 0.5%. Gram-positive bacteria represented 88.8%, with S. epidermidis and S. aureus being the most frequent species. The highest frequency of positivity according to the type of blood component was CPBC (58.6%), in addition, the total number of blood components discarded in the period was 508, with the highest frequency of discarding FFP. Conclusion: The high susceptibility of bacterial plaque concentrates requires continuous improvements in hemotherapy services, updating transfusion safety and reducing the discard of blood components. Therefore, an analysis of the profile and frequency of bacterial contamination in PCs is essential for the adoption of prevention strategies.
