Abstract

Objective: To investigate the knowledge and attitudes of health professionals at a regional hospital regarding the in-hospital management of patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 40 professionals from the care teams of a regional hospital in the Federal District. Participants answered a structured questionnaire containing sociodemographic questions, a knowledge test on DM and an attitudes scale. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The majority of participants were female (82.5%) and nursing technicians (45.0%). The median score on the knowledge test was 29 (minimum 18 - maximum 39), and significant gaps were identified in topics such as hypoglycaemia and nutritional therapy. Professionals with more than five years' experience performed better. The attitudes scale revealed recognition of the need for training and appreciation of effective communication in DM patient care. Conclusion: The study showed deficits in professionals' knowledge of DM and reinforced the importance of ongoing educational strategies and strengthening multi-professional work to improve the quality of hospital care for these patients.
