Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the use of social networks and the level of knowledge about preventive methods and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in women. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study involving 400 women divided into two groups: G1 (n=182) and G2 (n=218). Results: The median age of G1 was 17 years, while that of G2 was 27 years. G1 spent more time on their cell phones, with a median of 7.55 hours per day compared to 6.83 hours in G2 (p=0.091). More than 95% of the participants had access to the internet, and 76.9% of G1 participants and 82.1% of G2 participants sought information about pregnancy on social networks, with no significant difference between the groups. Among social networks, G1 used WhatsApp (91.2%) and Facebook (76.9%) the most, while G2 preferred WhatsApp (91.2%) and Instagram (80.3%). In addition, syphilis was diagnosed in approximately 1 in 20 women in both groups. Conclusion: There was a high use of social networks via mobile devices and both groups reported having broad access to the internet and knowledge about contraception and STI prevention, despite the high prevalence of syphilis cases in both groups.
