Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to review the literature on the use of acupuncture in gestational low back pain. Methods: An integrative review was carried out to retrieve studies on the subject from the LILACS, MEDLINE, SCIELO and Portal BVS databases, with articles in Portuguese, Spanish or English, published between 2019 and 2024. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied in the selection. Results: Seven articles met the inclusion criteria, with six in English and one in Portuguese. The distribution by year of publication was as follows: three from 2019, one from 2021, one from 2022, one from 2023 and one from 2024. The analysis of the quality of the studies revealed that three were of high quality, three of moderate quality and one of low quality. Research shows that acupuncture is more effective when combined with traditional drug treatment in relieving low back pain and improving the quality of life of pregnant women. Conclusion: Available studies indicate that acupuncture can be used effectively and safely during pregnancy, constituting a relevant therapeutic alternative for the discomforts typical of this phase. The side effects associated with the treatment are generally minimal and do not represent significant risks to the fetus.
