Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) correlating their disabilities with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study in which 135 patients were assessed as having definitive ALS, according to the El Escorial criteria, by neurologists and physiatrists, as well as classified by the ICF in several functional domains by the multidisciplinary team. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistics with the IBM SPSS Statistics software. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample consisted of 7 patients with Familial ALS and 128 with Sporadic ALS, 73 (54.1%) male (M:F), 34 (25.2%) classified as Bulbar and 101 (74.8%) as non-Bulbar. The mean age was 59 years. The mean time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was 33 months. Conclusion: The epidemiology was similar to that of developed countries; however, it was observed that patients arrived with great incapacity to perform Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and Activities of Daily Living, and that despite the epidemiological descriptors, diagnosis and rehabilitation were performed late.
