Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of children and adolescents with oral mucositis (OM) undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: Analytical observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative study involving 30 patients aged 0 to 19 years hospitalized at the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital (HUAC) in Campina Grande. Data were collected using the World Health Organization (WHO) scale and the sociodental indicator Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP). Results: Cancer prevalence was higher in males (63.3%), with a similar distribution among white and mixed-race individuals (46.7%). A higher proportion of married parents (46.7%), high school education (43.3%), and income between 1 and 3 minimum wages (56.7%) was observed. The OIDP questionnaire identified oral health impacts before and between 7 to 10 days after the chemotherapy cycle. The most prevalent oral diseases were cavities (13.3%) in the first assessment and mouth sores (16.7%) in the second. OM had the highest prevalence at grade I (40%) and was more severe in male patients. Conclusion: OM significantly impacts patients' QoL, affecting their ability to eat and speak, causing pain and discomfort, which may lead to treatment interruption.
