Abstract

Objective: To identify, in the available literature, the knowledge of emergency and urgent care professionals regarding palliative care. Methods: This is a quantitative integrative review conducted in six stages: defining the topic, searching databases, categorizing and evaluating studies, interpreting results, and synthesizing knowledge. The descriptors used were: Emergency Hospital Service Professionals; Knowledge; Palliative Care. Articles were included if they were in English, Portuguese, or Spanish; available in full text; and published within the last 10 years. Duplicate articles, editorials, dissertations, theses, and reviews were excluded. Results: Five international articles were included, all sourced from the PubMed database. The analyzed studies indicated that, although emergency and urgent care professionals possess some knowledge of palliative care, their understanding is often contradictory and limited, which impacts the effective application of this approach in clinical practice. Final Considerations: It is concluded that, despite the theoretical foundation, professionals still face challenges in integrating palliative care into emergency and urgent care routines. This difficulty emphasizes the need for continuous training and strategies to promote the implementation of palliative practices aimed at improving patients' quality of life.
