Abstract
Objective: To identify the profile and causes of hospitalizations of patients receiving palliative care in a teaching hospital. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted between 2019 and 2021. Demographic (age and gender) and clinical data (hospitalizations and classification using the Perroca scale) were obtained from the electronic medical records of patients admitted to Santa Barbara Hospital of São Leopoldo Mandic School. Results: Two hundred patients were analyzed, predominantly male (59.5%), with a mean age of 70.5 years (±14.8). Of the patients, 96% had up to two hospitalizations. Neoplasms were the leading cause of hospitalization (20.5%), followed by respiratory diseases (13%) and neurological diseases (12.5%). Evaluation of hospitalization complexity using the Perroca scale showed that 25.5% were intensive cases, 44% were semi-intensive, 20% were intermediate, and 10.5% were minimal. Conclusion: The majority of patients were elderly and male, with neoplasms being the leading cause of hospitalization. The distribution of hospitalization complexity revealed a predominance of semi-intensive care, highlighting the relevance of palliative care in the clinical management of these patients.
