Abstract
Objective: To identify in the literature the effects of unstable blood glucose levels in patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. Methods: An integrative review was conducted between August and October 2023, based on the question: “What are the effects of unstable blood glucose levels in adults in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery?”. The search was carried out in the SCOPUS, PUBMED/MEDLINE, and LILACS databases, including original studies from the last seven years, available in full text in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The final sample included 16 articles. Results: Unstable blood glucose levels are associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospital stay, atrial fibrillation, acute kidney injury, stroke, delirium, postoperative infections, higher costs, and frequent readmissions. Final considerations: Recognizing the impacts of unstable blood glucose levels and implementing control strategies are essential for better outcomes. The use of glycemic control protocols appears to be a promising approach. Further studies are needed to deepen knowledge on this topic, with an emphasis on the immediate postoperative period.
