Abstract
Objective: To describe the effects of strength training on functional gains and the maintenance of good health-related quality of life in older adults. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental, quantitative, descriptive study conducted with 36 older adults aged 71 years on average. Participants underwent 16 weeks of strength training, with three weekly sessions lasting 50 minutes each. Quality of life was assessed using the SF-12 questionnaire, and functional capacity was evaluated through the Sit-and-Stand Test, Timed Up and Go, Handgrip Strength Test, and the Wells Bench Test, conducted pre-, during, and post-intervention. Data were compared and correlated, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results: There was a significant improvement in functional tests (p<0.0001) both during and post-intervention, except for flexibility, which showed significant results only post-intervention (p<0.0001). A moderate correlation was observed between functional test results and quality of life scores, suggesting that greater independence is associated with better perceived quality of life. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of active aging and physical activities, particularly strength training, as an effective strategy to promote health, functionality, and quality of life in older adults.
