Abstract

Objective: To validate the content of an instrument for evaluating phlebitis in a highly complex hospital. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative and qualitative study for data processing and analysis. The Delphi technique was used. For content validation, the Kappa index and Content Validity Index (CVI) were applied to verify the level of agreement and consistency of the experts. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Two rounds of the Delphi method were required to validate the questionnaire. The first round included 24 experts and the second round included 15 experts. At the end of the second round, five of the eight items of the instrument obtained substantial agreement (Kappa 0.63) and three, almost perfect agreement (Kappa 0.80 to 1.00). Due to the minimum established CVI of 0.75, all items were also approved. Due to the overall value obtained (CVI 0.90 and Kappa 0.74). Conclusion: The instrument was validated by experts and constitutes an important tool in healthcare provided by the multidisciplinary team and in patient safety, especially within tertiary care.
