Abstract

Objective: To synthesize scientific evidence highlighting the relevance of heterocyclic compounds for medicinal chemistry and human health. Literature Review: Heterocyclic compounds are organic molecules containing a closed ring with one or more heteroatoms (non-carbon atoms). These compounds have gained significant attention due to their remarkable versatility in healthcare applications. Various natural and synthetic biomolecules are composed of heterocyclic rings, including DNA, ATP, clinically relevant antibiotics, caffeine, anticoagulants such as warfarin, and numerous other compounds capable of treating diseases or improving human quality of life. Research interest in these compounds is rapidly increasing due to advancements in synthetic methodologies and their versatility in interacting with biological targets. In this study, recent advances in heterocyclic derivatives, such as pyridine, thiophene, pyrrole, coumarins, furan, quinoline, and others, were identified in the development of anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibiotic, antifungal, and other therapeutic agents. Conclusion: It is concluded that continuous research on the synthesis of new substances derived from heterocyclic compounds is essential for reducing morbidity and mortality associated with numerous diseases affecting society.
