Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the rate of episiotomies performed in a public state maternity hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional, population-based study with a quantitative approach, conducted in a maternity hospital located in the metropolitan region of Belém, in the state of Pará, through the collection of data from medical records of postpartum women who had normal births and analyzed them using descriptive statistics. Results: Of the total of 180 medical records, it was observed that 96 deliveries were vaginal, and 9 postpartum women underwent episiotomy. The selected research criteria were: maternal age, parity, fetal weight, Apgar score at 1 minute, gestational age, professional category that assisted the birth, birth shift, method of labor induction, and complications during pregnancy and birth. Conclusion: The overall rate obtained during the research is within the limits of current recommendations; however, the practical application did not prove to be based on data and scientific evidence that would justify it. The research aims to perpetuate the discussion on episiotomy and highlight the importance of indications in fully justified cases.
