Abstract

Objective: To perform an analysis and review of the main articles available on the financial impact of meningomyelocele (MMC) and the cost-effectiveness of available treatments (fetal and neonatal surgery). Literature review: MMC generates a high cost related to the sequelae of malformations, with high consumption of health services and functional limitations of patients. The effect of the cost affects the health system (public or private) as a whole, as well as families, generating the concept of financial toxicity. Since the MOMS study was conducted in 2011, fetal surgery for the treatment of MMC has become widespread, with concern about the cost-effectiveness of the procedure. Considering the short- and medium-term results, several studies have considered that there are savings with the intrauterine procedure, even with the higher initial cost, which has the potential to reduce final healthcare expenses. Final considerations: MMC is a malformation of the CNS that has an impact on the development of cognitive and physical abilities of affected patients, with the possibility of fetal or neonatal treatment. Cost-effectiveness studies of fetal treatment are needed, compared to neonatal treatment, with data that show the Brazilian reality, where costs are different from those in high-income countries.
