Abstract

Objective: To understand the emotional impacts experienced by postpartum mothers of babies who underwent hospital hospitalization. Methods: Descriptive-qualitative research was conducted with a population of 14 mothers and/or postpartum women who experienced the situation of childbirth and their child’s hospital admission. Data were collected through an online questionnaire (Google Forms) consisting of six qualitative questions with open-ended responses. For analysis, the content analysis technique proposed by Laurence Bardin was used. Results: The main feelings shared by the mothers were fear, anxiety, and guilt, emotions intensified by their babies' hospitalization and the uncertainty about their recovery. The research participants highlighted how essential it was to have emotional support from the healthcare team and the support of their families to cope with such a challenging moment. Conclusion: It is concluded that a baby’s hospitalization significantly affects the mental health of postpartum women, emphasizing the need for welcoming and humanized care, as well as adequate support, to alleviate emotional impacts and strengthen the healthy connection between mother and baby.
