Abstract
Objective: To describe the scientific evidence on the use of plaster casts for supracondylar fractures of the humerus. Methods: This is an integrative literature review study, with the guiding research question: “What is the most effective type of orthopedic immobilization for recovery after definitive treatment for patients with supracondylar fractures of the humerus?”. The study included articles published in English, Spanish and Portuguese; articles published in journals that answered the guiding question; full articles in the database and publication date in the last ten years. The exclusion criteria selected were: Duplicate articles, letters to the editor, case reports and editorials. Results: The review included 8 published studies on orthopedic immobilization in the treatment of supracondylar fractures. The axillopalmar splint is as effective as the circumferential plaster cast in immobilizing fractures, and monitoring with radiographs is essential to ensure fracture stability. The use of splints after surgery may reduce the risk of loss of reduction. Final considerations: It is considered that there is no consensus on the ideal immobilization strategy for supracondylar fractures, except in the case of Gartland type I fractures, in which there is agreement on the use of conservative treatment.
