Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence of psychodermatoses among medical students and correlate their onset or worsening with stress factors triggered by the course. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational and non-interventional study carried out in a private higher education institution in Teresina-Pi with medical students from the 5th to the 12th period of the course. Results: 108 students took part in the study, the majority of whom were female, with 74 cases (68.5%), 43 (39.8%) were aged between 18 and 22 and 23 and 27, respectively. In addition, 72 students (66.7%) said they had some dermatological condition, while 36 (33.3%) said they did not. The prevalence of dermatological conditions was higher among students in the 8th and 10th periods, with 16 students (22.2%) and 15 (20.8%). The most common dermatological conditions were acne, with 18 cases (25%), 14 (19.4%) with seborrheic dermatitis, 9 (9.7%) with contact dermatitis and 7 (9.7%) with atopic dermatitis. It was also possible to observe that 41 students (56.9%) reported that their dermatological conditions worsen significantly at times during the school term. Conclusion: This study reveals a significant prevalence of psychodermatoses among medical students, especially among women and younger students.
