Abstract
Objective: Investigating the effect of nutritional supplementation with açaí in an experimental model of hepatic IR in rats. Methods: 15 male rats were divided into three groups: Sham: untreated, no IR induction; IR: untreated, subjected to hepatic IR; AÇAÍ+IR: treated with açaí extract 500 mg/kg and subjected to IR. There were 15 days of treatment. On the 16th day, the animals underwent 30 minutes of ischemia and 24 hours of reperfusion. On the 17th day, the livers were collected to analyze the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), glutathione (GSH), uric acid (UA) and antioxidant capacity equivalent to trolox by inhibiting ABTS-+ (CA-ABTS) and DPPH- radicals (CA-DPPH). Results: Our results showed that treatment with açaí extract decreased the concentration of TBARS and GSH compared to the Sham and IR groups. UA increased significantly in the IR group, but with no significant change in AÇAÍ+IR. CA-ABTS and CA-DPPH levels in the AÇAÍ+IR group increased significantly compared to the Sham and IR groups. Conclusion:Açaí was able to attenuate oxidative stress and increase the antioxidant capacity observed in the hepatic IR model, highlighting its potential for preventing tissue damage related to hepatic IR.
