Abstract

Objective: To characterize the epidemiological profile of snakebite accidents with a focus on the demographic distribution of cases in the municipalities with the most notifications in the state of Pará, Brazil. Methods: The study used data from the Ministry of Health and the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), organized by the DATASUS Tabnet system. As the article uses data from public databases, it was not necessary to submit the research to the ethics committee, in accordance with resolution 466 of the National Health Council. Results: Between 2019 and 2023, snakebite accident rates in Pará fluctuated, peaking in 2021 and decreasing in the following years. The majority, 79.7%, of victims were men, aged between 20 and 39 years (37,6%), and the most common snake genus was Bothrops, accounting for 97.1% of cases. 53.1% of bites occurred on the foot and 90% of victims received antivenom, with a cure rate of 84%. Santarém had the highest number of notifications, with 28.1%. Conclusion: To reduce accidents, it is essential to invest in the ongoing training of health professionals, improve care infrastructure, and promote preventive education in schools and communities. Prevention should be the responsibility of the government, health professionals, and society.
