Abstract

Objective: To analyze trends in morbidity and mortality rates due to intracranial trauma in the state of Piauí from 2014 to 2024. Methods: This was an epidemiological and quantitative study conducted using data from the SUS Hospital Information System. Results: The majority of medical care cases were emergency-related, totaling 26,532 cases (99.9%). During this period, the mortality rate was higher among males (10.69%), who also had a longer average hospitalization time (6.2 days versus 5.7 days for females). The average daily hospitalization cost was R$ 1,713.42 for men and R$ 1,511.81 for women, resulting in a total expenditure of R$ 29,506,886.25 and R$ 6,181,106.74, respectively. The 40 to 59 age group had the longest average hospitalization time (6.5 days), while patients aged 80 and over had the highest average cost (R$ 2,062.50). Meanwhile, the 20 to 39 age group generated the highest total expenditure (R$ 14,488,049.63).
Conclusion:
There was a high demand for emergency care, a higher incidence and mortality rate among males, and high hospitalization costs.
