Abstract
Objective: To describe the scientific evidence on the importance of self-care in the prevention and control of arterial hypertension in primary health care. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the BDENF, PUBMED and LILACS databases. Results: Based on the search strategy and after selection and analysis of the eligibility criteria, approximately 10 studies met all the criteria and were incorporated into this integrative review. The reviewed studies highlighted that self-care is essential for the effective management of hypertension, but its implementation faces significant challenges, such as socioeconomic barriers, lack of motivation and difficulties in accessing specialized guidance. Age negatively influences self-care, with a significant inverse correlation in the health management domain, and found that it is urgent to increase knowledge about hypertension and its complications, in addition to strengthening the support of health services to overcome socioeconomic barriers. Final considerations: Self-care is crucial for controlling hypertension, but its effectiveness depends on multifaceted approaches that consider socioeconomic, educational, and behavioral factors. Strategies such as educational interventions, technological support, and continuous monitoring are essential to promote adherence to self-care and improve clinical outcomes.
