Abstract
Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of hip fracture hospitalizations and deaths in elderly individuals in the state of Maranhão from 2015 to 2024.Methods: This was an epidemiological, documentary, observational, applied, descriptive, and quantitative study based on data from the Hospital Information System of SUS (SIH/SUS), provided by the Ministry of Health through DATASUS. Results: A total of 8,410 hospitalizations and 356 deaths due to hip fractures in the elderly were reported in Maranhão, with an annual average of 841 cases. Among the hospitalizations, 68.0% occurred in women, and 44.4% of patients were 80 years or older. Regarding deaths, 63.3% occurred among women, and 71.1% of deaths were in elderly individuals aged 80 or older. The majority of hospitalized patients and those who died were of mixed race (49.6% and 44.9%, respectively), and most hospitalizations were classified as urgent (7,107 cases). The total cost of hospitalizations was nearly 15 million, with an average length of stay of 10.3 days. Conclusion: Hip fractures in Maranhão have a high impact on hospitalizations and deaths, highlighting the urgent need for prevention strategies and appropriate care for this population.
