Abstract

Objective: To identify, through the application of questionnaires, cases of postpartum depression (PPD) in a maternity and to evaluate a possible relationship with premature births. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, carried out with postpartum women at Santa Casa de Misericórdia. The research was carried out with a convenience sample of 245 postpartum women. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was applied to screen for PPD risk. Results: This study included 245 women who were contacted on average 32.8 ± 2.7 days after delivery. The prevalence of PPD risk according to the EPDS score was 34.3%. The mean gestational age was 37.9 ± 2.2 weeks, and 15.9% of deliveries were premature. No differences were found in gestational information when comparing the groups with and without PPD. Conclusion: This study did not demonstrate an association between PPD and preterm birth. However, it showed a high prevalence of PPD, tracked by EPDS among the women interviewed. Additionally, women with PPD presented greater social vulnerability, reinforcing the importance of considering socioeconomic factors in the management of this condition.
