Abstract

Objective: To describe the sociodemographic profile of medical students in the city of Rio de Janeiro and to identify the correlation between the use of cognitive stimulants, academic performance, stress levels, and mental health. Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative, observational, and descriptive study with medical students from the 1st to 6th year of private universities in Rio de Janeiro. A questionnaire with standardized questions was applied online between May 2018 and May 2024. Results: Of the 169 students, 34.9% reported using stimulants, predominantly in the 3rd period. Among these, 47.6% noticed an improvement in academic performance, 29.8% did not notice any difference, and 26.4% were undecided. In addition, 71.6% of students reported increased anxiety after entering the course, with the eve of exams being the period of greatest anxiety for 62.1% of students. Regarding the use of energy drinks, 46.1% reported regular or occasional consumption. Conclusion: The use of stimulants showed varied effects on students' academic performance and mental health, highlighting the need for universities to pay greater attention to the impacts on anxiety and the use of stimulant substances to maintain academic performance.
