Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the association between the availability, quality, and price of fruits and vegetables and the consumption of a healthy dietary pattern (HDP) among adult women. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, population-based study, including audit data from 206 commercial establishments located within the vicinity (42 buffers) of the residences of a representative sample of 1,128 women aged 20 to 69 years, residing in the urban area from a city in the metropolitan region of Rio Grande do Sul. The HDP consisted of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, dairy products, and natural juice, identified through principal component analysis based on a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Linear regression was used to test the associations of interest. Results: A positive association was observed between the average price of fruits and vegetables and HDP consumption, regardless of sociodemographic characteristics within the buffers. Additionally, age, skin color, and education level within the buffers were associated with HDP consumption. Greater availability of fruits and vegetables was also linked to better quality. Conclusion: The findings of this study reinforce the importance of price and availability as key factors for initiatives aimed at increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.
