Abstract

Objective: To analyze the perception of oncology nurses regarding the process of death and dying in their patients, according to the From melt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD-B) scale. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach. It covered the state of Piauí, and the city of Teresina was the unit of analysis. Data collection was carried out with 31 oncology nurses through the application of a structured and validated online questionnaire, where parametric tests were used: Student's t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson's Correlation. Results: The data indicate a predominantly positive and empathetic attitude of professionals regarding the care of people at the end of life. It is noteworthy that most nurses (84%) believe or fully agree that caring for a terminally ill patient is a valuable experience, and 77.4% state that death is not necessarily the worst thing that can happen to someone. The data indicate a group with extensive experience and preparation to deal with patients in palliative care. Conclusion: It was found that the care provided by oncology nurses is more humane and predominantly female. The greater the prior knowledge and skills, the better the quality of care provided.
