Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between breast cancer (BC) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) to better elucidate and manage the topic, which is often surrounded by biases. Methods: This is an Integrative Review (IR) of the literature on the relationship between menopausal hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer. A bibliographic survey was carried out in the following databases and virtual libraries: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS and BVS/Medline. After careful analysis and application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 scientific articles were selected and listed in this review. Results: The information that the longer the exposure to menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), the greater the risk of breast cancer (BC) was consolidated. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that estrogen alone was not associated with an increased risk of BC. Vaginal estrogen is not associated with an increase in BC, and when used in patients with BC, it does not increase mortality. Data on incidence, mortality and survival are conflicting. Final considerations: The importance of individualized management and informed discussion with the patient is highlighted. However, long-term studies should be encouraged due to the great relevance of this topic, which is still being discussed globally.
